We’ve all known for a long time that Steph Curry is one of the best shooters in the NBA, but does he have some competition in Devin Booker? The Phoenix Suns shooting guard is slowly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the league, so is he the next big thing in basketball?
Devin Booker knew that teams in the NBA would come calling for his services at a young age, that’s why he didn’t bother doing his final three years at college. Even though he was only 19, the Phoenix Suns made him their first-round draft pick in 2015 after his one and only season with the Kentucky Wildcats. His rookie year didn’t set the world alight, but the fact he got to play in the NBA at 19 is already better than most.
His first season in the NBA was all about finding his feet and his next three seasons were all about shining on the court. He became a starter for the Suns, and his points per game have risen to 21.4. Booker is quickly becoming one of the most reliable shooters in the sport, and his career field goal accuracy of 43.7 shows he knows how to find the basket.
Following in some big footsteps
When Booker came into the league he was young, and that meant any time he did something impressive he would be compared to the greats who came before him. He is the sixth youngest player to get 20 points in an NBA game, and he was the youngest Suns player ever to score a double-double.
Some of the players to achieve those feats at a younger age include LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. If he can go on to have a similar career to those players, then greatness is not far away. He is actually the youngest player in NBA history to score 50 points in consecutive games, as he looks to begin fulfilling his potential.
Backing him with a contract
The Phoenix Suns might still be continuing to struggle on the court, but they were more than happy to offer Booker a huge contract. He signed a five-year $158 million deal that will begin in the 2019-20 season.
Booker is ready to stay at the Suns, but if they continue to fail in the recruitment department, it’s going to be a one-man show for more seasons to come. The shooting guard is the Suns’ most productive player on the court and who they look to the most to get them the points.
Dragging his team to wins
Critics of Booker’s will say that the only way he can be considered the next big thing is if he can drag his team to the playoffs regularly. He often scored highly in games, but even with his high points totals, the Suns continue to lose more than they win.
If he can learn to make the rest of his teammates play better too then Booker could just be the next big thing. He has the talent, he now needs the winning record to match it.
