Celebrities come in all shapes and sizes and are people we look up and aspire to be like. The success of many of the world’s top celebrities is definite motivation and inspiration for the rest of us to try to follow suit. You often find that a lot of top celebrities often have interests outside of their profession. We look at rock stars or actors and think that they must play music and watch movies in their spare time as well. But, keep in mind that these are their jobs, and they probably would rather be doing something else.
There are a lot of celebrities out there who have a keen interest in the sporting world, and will often be snapped attending games. Sports are such a universal thing for people to enjoy, and they bring us together as people. Even celebrities need the buzz and excitement of a sporting event to help get their juices flowing. These are some of the big name celebrities who own a sports team, or part of a sports team.
Former N’Sync heartthrob JT, and his wife Jessica Biel are minority shareholders in basketball team the Memphis Grizzlies. In fact, Timberlake and Biel can often be found at games, dressed in the blue and white of their beloved NBA franchise. The team is the only sporting franchise in any of the major North American sports leagues to be based in Memphis. Timberlake was first spotted attending a Grizzlies game in 2012 when he watched their game against the LA Lakers at the FedExForum.
J-Lo might not strike you as the sporty type, but she obviously loves football enough to become a shareholder. In 2009, she and her then-husband Marc Anthony bought a small percentage of NFL franchise team the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins are considered sleeping giants in the NFL these days, with their glory days coming in the ‘70s. In spite of that, they are still a hugely popular team, and Lopez was just one celebrity to buy a stake in the Dolphins. Other celebs involved include Gloria Estefan and her husband, and the Williams sisters.
Now, we all know how much Jay-Z loves his basketball, he seems to be at games every other weekend, whether Beyonce joins him or not! So, it kinda makes sense that the rap superstar would become an investor is a basketball team. In 2004, the Brooklyn native, real name Shawn Carter, was part of a group that bought New Jersey Nets for $300 million. Eventually, the team moved to Brooklyn and changed their name to the better-known Brooklyn Nets. Jay-Z sold his share of the team in 2013, in an attempt to start his own sports agency.
Not content with conquering the acting world, or winning Grammys, Will Smith decided to turn his hand to sports ownership as well. In 2011, he, and wife Jada Pinkett Smith purchased a percentage of basketball franchise the Philadelphia 76ers, who play in Smith’s home city of Philly. There are other shareholders who own percentages in the team, but by far and away the Smith’s are the most well-known.
It’s pretty clear that celebrities just can’t get enough of the world of sport. In fact, many of them were probably frustrated, or even gifted athletes in their younger years. Owning or part-owning a sports franchise can be a great way to connect that real love of sports, while also having an investment at the same time.
